Dr. Amberg started caring for patients at Grossmont Hospital way back in 1983. He returned to San Diego County from residency training in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to be closer to his family in La Jolla. Starting in Santee, then at Navajo and Lake Murray, Dr. Amberg finally moved onto the Grossmont Hospital Campus where he practices now. When Sharp HealthCare started its Family Medicine Residency Program, he was selected to be a professor in their Model Clinic. He became Chief of the Medical Staff of Grossmont Hospital in 1998 (a one year term) , and currently serves as chairman of the Family Medicine Department. The Medical Staff Executive Committee of Grossmont Hospital chose Dr. Amberg to be the Grossmont Hospital representative to the California Medical Association Organized Medical Staff Section.
Dr. Amberg involves himself in hospital leadership, but he focuses mainly on primary care medicine. Dr. Amberg cares for patients in the office Monday through Friday, and an occasional Saturday. As a Family Medicine specialist he serves patients of all ages, with a wide variety of illnesses. Hypertension, diabetes, minor injuries, respiratory infections and rashes are seen daily. Preventive care (health maintenance examinations) is encouraged for men, women and children. Patients are expected to care for themselves with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoidance of smoking cigarettes. Minor surgery on warts, cysts, and other skin growths are performed as needed. Depression, anxiety, and male sexual dysfunction are nothing to be ashamed of, and Dr. Amberg will work with you on these problems.
Though the Residency Program closed, Dr Amberg still enjoys teaching medical students. Most Tuesday afternoons there is a third year medical student working with Dr. Amberg in his office. His patients enjoy the detailed questioning and extremely thorough exams and illness explanation given by the student from the University of California at San Diego. Dr Amberg carefully reviews the students work and examines all patients seen by student.
He lives with his wife and high school age son in El Cajon. One son attends UCLA. The other son studies engineering at Harvey Mudd College.
In order to be able to have time for each patient, Dr. Amberg stopped accepting new families effective May 1, 2005. If you are currently an established patient of Dr. Amberg he will gladly continue to care for you and your family, even if you change health plans. If your children are feeling too old to be at the pediatrician, Dr Amberg will gladly assume their medical care.
