Grossmont Family Medical Group is prepared to accept your calls from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, and 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday. If you need assistance after hours you have two options:
- If the situation is an emergency, call 911 or go directly to the emergency room. This would include situations when a patient is unconscious or has chest pain.
- If the situation is not life-threatening, but is urgent and you wish to speak to a doctor, you can reach the doctor on call by telephoning the office number (619) 644-6500. Our after-hours voicemail system will give you options to leave a message. The voicemail system will page the on call doctor. We cannot return calls to pagers. Our on call physicians will not release their home numbers to a caller ID machine. Please do not ask for a return call to a phone that blocks calls from phones that do not release their number.
1. What kind of information should I be prepared to leave on our after hours voicemail system?
Besides the full name of the patient (if you are calling for someone else), be prepared to describe the symptoms briefly and to state when the symptoms began. Please also have available a pharmacy phone number, in case the physician needs to call your pharmacy. You will need to speak slowly and clearly. Please repeat your call back telephone number twice.
2. How soon will I receive a return call from a doctor?
That depends on the nature of the call and time constraints of the doctor. If you do not hear back within 30 minutes, and the situation requires prompt attention, make a repeat call to page the on call doctor again. Routine calls about appointments, medication refills and non-urgent problems need to be made during regular office hours on weekdays. There is also a general mailbox when you call our after hours system where you can leave a non-urgent message.
